Mary E. (McCormick) Stieve


Mary E (McCormick) Stieve was born on February 2, 1933, a daughter to Joseph & Helen (Condon) McCormick, the first baby born in the new hospital. In 1941 the McCormick family moved to Baraboo to be close to their father's work. Mary and her siblings all attended St. Joseph Grade School. Mary graduated from St. Joseph's in 1947 and from Baraboo High School in 1951, she furthered her education at the Sauk County Normal School graduating in 1953. Mary started her teaching career in a one room school consisting of grades one through eight.

On May 22,1954 Mary was united in marriage at St. Joseph Catholic Church to the love of her life, Roger E. Stieve, son of Fred & Anna Stieve of Baraboo. This union remained until Roger's death in December of 2014. Mary & Roger were blessed with five children. Roger & Mary lived on the family Farm, when Roger was drafted in the army in 1955, Mary and their young son remained in Baraboo while Mary continued her teaching Career while Roger served his country. In 1959 with two sons and a daughter, the family moved to their long-time residence on Guppy Street in Baraboo. In 1961 Mary went to work at Industrial Coils and returned to teaching at St. Joseph School in 1968 and remained teaching there for thirty years. During this time Mary went back to school at UW Platteville and earned her Bachelor's of Art Degree in Elementary Education. Mary is survived by her five children, Anthony of Chicago, IL, Teri & Tom Dorner, Tim & Deb Stieve, Kathy & John Statz and Kevin & Tammy Stieve all of Baraboo, Three brothers J. Patrick McCormick of Springfield, IL, Bill & Jan McCormick of Racine, WI, Jim & Carol McCormick of Ames, IA and one sister, Teri McCormick of Madison, WI, many nieces and nephews, fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Mary was extremely proud of her Irish heritage and in the fall of 1998 Mary travelled with her sister to Ireland. In March of 2001 Mary was name the Irish Rose of the South Central Shamrock Club. In retirement Mary became involved in the St. Clare Hospital Auxiliary serving as President for three terms and thirteen years as membership Chair, was a member of the Daughters of Isabella where she served as Regent for three terms, was in charge of funeral dinners at St. Josephs for several years and served as the Secretary for the Retired Teachers and South Central Shamrock Club. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Roger; her parents; her in-laws; her sister-in-law, Monica, a niece and nephew. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Jay Poster officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of mass at the church. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The Daughters of Isabella will pray the rosary on Friday, March 23, 2018 at 4 p.m. at church in honor of Mary. In Lieu of Flowers memorials may be made to the St. Joseph's Annual Fund, Endowment Fund or the St. Clare Cardiac unit. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family. Mary wanted to make sure that she said "thank you" to her children for the several years of care that they provided her and to Father Jay Poster. The Family members wanted to thank Dr. Danny Sessler for the many years of care provided to Mom and a special thank you to the staff at Meadow Lane and St. Clare Meadow Rehab for all they did for Mom during her stay.
