Jerome A. “Jerry” Verthein


Jerome A. "Jerry" Verthein, age 81 of Baraboo, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017 at St. Clare Meadows Care Center. Jerome, son of Arthur and Gertrude (Bainbridge) Verthein was born Jan. 10, 1936 in Rock Springs. He was a graduate of Reedsburg High School, Class of 1953. On Sept. 17, 1960 he was united in marriage to Geraldine "Gerry" Egerer. After high school Jerry worked at Farmers Co-op in Rock Springs as a bookkeeper and eventually as manager. In June of 1960 he left the co-op and he and Gerry started J.A. Verthein Construction Company, Inc. which they operated together for over 50 years. With the help of this wife, he did the designing, building and managing of all aspects of his projects from start to finish of all jobs from custom homes to commercial buildings. Jerry was the first president of the Mid-Wisconsin Home Builders Association. In his free time he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jerry had his pilot's license and operated his own single engine plane for many years. His family will fondly remember him for being a dedicated hard worker as well as a jokester. He is survived by his wife, Gerry of Baraboo; sister, Gloria Wharton of DeForest; brother, Chester of Mexico; cousin, Kathryn (Phillip) Hahn of Madison; sisters-in-law, Barb (John) Earl of Baraboo and Joan (Bob) Kuball of Baraboo as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his mother, Gertrude Verthein; father, Arthur Verthein; step-mother, Carrie Verthein; special uncle, Ervin Verthein; in-laws, William and Rufena Egerer.Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Redlin Funeral Home with Pastor Nick Maglietto officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the funeral home as well as on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church in Jerry's name.
