Esther Platt


Esther W. Platt, 95, of Baraboo passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017 at Meadow View.Esther was born on Feb. 17, 1922 to William and Iva Martin of Merrimac. She graduated from Sauk City High School in 1939, then worked as a nurse's aide at St. Mary's Hospital. She married the love of her life, Harold A. Platt, on Aug. 2, 1941. They were married 58 years living in the same home until this past June. She was proud to be a homemaker, raising three daughters.Esther had a great love for the outdoors, hiking, nature, and all creatures great and small. She dedicated much of her life as a volunteer, some being: the hospital coffee shop, church librarian, Jefferson Meadows shopper/bingo helper, and a special ski Olympics aide. Her most rewarding was helping Baraboo High School sophomores look for biology points. Over more than a 40-year span, she took over 200 students to the woods in search of birds and plants. She was into her 80's when she took her last kids out.She is survived by her daughters, Karen (Gary) Henke of New London, Cheri (Tim) Lowe of Merrimac, Renee (Dan) Madden of Madison; grandchildren, Jodi (Kevin) Henke, Josh (Megan) Lowe, Meghan Madden, Adam (Andrea) Lowe; great-grandchildren, Ben Reardon, Norah Lowe and Simon Lowe. Esther is further survived by her sister, Helen Gollmar; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Will and Betty Jean (Joe) Wedekind as well as many beloved nieces and nephews and friends.She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Iva Martin, husband, Harold A. Platt; sisters, Joyce (Ross) Genrich and Jean (Junior) Ziehmke and brothers-in-law, Wayne Gollmar, Art Will, Jim (Cora) Platt and Ronnie Platt.Funeral Services will be held on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Nick Maglietto officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ochsner Park - River Otter Exhibit or to the International Crane Foundation. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family.
