Evelyn A. Platt

Evelyn A. Platt of Baraboo, died peacefully at age 97, surrounded by her loving family, on September 15, 2017, at Oak Park Place in Baraboo. Evelyn was born on Friday, February 27, 1920, in the small farming community of Reedsville, Wisconsin to William J. Krueger and Anna Kunert Krueger. William and Anna proudly announced Evelyn's birth and arrival as a "Friday's child", which, from an old nursery rhyme dating back to the 16^th century, reads "Friday's child is loving and giving". She lived her entire life as a Friday's child loving her sons and family, admiring the natural beauty of the world, adoring every child she met, and devotedly teaching children over a 38 year career. Evelyn was raised on a small farm where she and her family's primary spoken language was German. It was here where she learned the true meaning of hard work, cared for and tended to other living beings, and learned life seldom goes according to the original plan. Evelyn attended rural schools and was a graduate of Reedsville High School. She was the first in her family to pursue secondary education. She attended and graduated from the Milwaukee State Teacher's College (now the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee) in 1942. With degrees in both Primary and Exceptional Education, her first teaching opportunity took her to Appleton where a few years later she met Clinton Platt from Baraboo. She was united in marriage to Clinton W. Platt on June 26, 1948 and moved to Baraboo. They were married 20 wonderful years until Clinton's death in 1968. Evelyn taught children for 38 years; 6 years as an elementary teacher in Appleton and 32 years primarily as a special needs teacher in Baraboo. Over those years she mentored and provided loving guidance to hundreds of children. Throughout her busy teaching years, Evelyn directed the Children's Choir at the First United Methodist Church, taught piano lessons, and enjoyed her beautiful garden with beds of flowers and tree roses. She was a member of the National and Wisconsin Retired Teacher's Association, P.E.O. Chapter B.R. Baraboo, and First United Methodist Church. Evelyn was a wonderful person, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend to many. She loved to talk with her sons, their spouses, grandchildren and friends. By her example she taught her family compassion, humor, kindness, love, determination, and the strength and importance of family. She will be greatly missed by those she loved and those who loved her. She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Brian C. Platt (Janet), Highland, Utah; and Todd W. Platt (Margaret "Peggy"), Appleton, Wisconsin. She is further survived by four grandchildren, David Platt (Alexis), Laura Platt (Kevin McParlan), Lindsey Easterly (Darek), and Andrew Platt (Melissa); as well as four great-grandchildren and three nieces, Janet Stephenson, Susan Richey, and Carol Saylor, she was very close to. She was preceded in death by her parents William J. Krueger and Anna Kunert Kruger, husband Clinton W. Platt, and sister Ruby Krueger Salutz. Visitation will be at the First United Methodist Church, 615 Broadway Street, Baraboo, starting at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 21st, 2017 followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with reception to follow. Memorial contributions can be made to the "Evelyn Platt Memorial Fund" which the family will use towards Baraboo School District special needs students, the First United Methodist Church Choir, and garden plantings at Oak Park Place. Evelyn's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate and loving staff at Oak Park and to the Agrace Hospice care giving team. Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family. Evelyn loved the following verse "Just remember, in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows, lays a seed, that with the sun's love, in the spring, becomes the rose." Amanda McBroom
