Laura A. Joachim


Laura A. Joachim, age 93 of Baraboo died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017 at St. Clare Hospital after a short illness. Laura, daughter of Ewald and Elizabeth (Henke) Gurgle was born Nov. 24, 1923 in Reedsburg. She met her future husband at Niagara Falls, New York at the height of World War Two and was united in marriage to Michael Charles Joachim on Jan. 19, 1944 at the Dale Mabry Field Chapel in Tallahassee, Florida. She started her working career as a nanny and also was employed by St. John's Lutheran School and the University of Baraboo-Sauk County in the kitchen where her culinary skills delighted many students over the years. Laura was a true depression era child who wasted nothing and whose frugality would be a lesson well learned by contemporary Americans. In earlier years she loved to cook, garden, fish and camp, and she loved those large extended family gatherings at holidays. Survivors include her sons, Jim Joachim of Baraboo and Steve Joachim Virginia Beach, Virginia; grandchildren, Sara Joachim of Norfolk, Virginia and Zachary Joachim of Richmond, Virginia; brother, Martin Gurgle of Baraboo; sister, Marian Powers of Baraboo as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, second cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Michael; and her siblings, Fred, Raymond, Hilda, Viola, Irene and Delores. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Nick Maglietto officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom. Memorials may be made to the American Red Cross to assist in Hurricane Relief. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family.
