Arlene Shew


Arlene Martha (Swanson) Shew passed away after living 4 1/2 years at SCMCC on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017 at the age of 94; she was born Sept. 13, 1922 to Rex and Freda Swanson. She graduated in 1940. Arlene was married on Dec. 25, 1941 to Benjamin Franklin Shew. Arlene, along with her husband Ben, owned and operated the Park View Inn grocery store, bar and restaurant. They also owned the Shew Motel and cabins. At one time, Arlene worked for Darrow's Super Market, as well as Pierce's Super Market in the 1950's. She used to babysit for a morning bowling league at Thunderbird Lanes. She also loved to go to garage sales, as well as have garage sales. Her love of knitting and crocheting produced many afghans, hand towels, and other items. Arlene and her husband Ben took many vacations and saw a lot of the United States from coast to coast.She is survived by her three children, Sharon (Bert) Payne of Baraboo, Joy (Jim) Smith of Portage; Tom Shew of Baraboo; one sister, Gloria Koch of Poynette; six grandchildren, Mark (Cheryl) McWilliams of Waunakee, Kim (Brian) Sefkar of Baraboo, Jay (Kerry) McWilliams of Elroy, Steve (Amanda) Payne of Baraboo, Adam (Amy) Romberg of Baraboo, Wade (Kristi) Romberg of Friendship; 18 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren, many other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben in 1987 and daughter-in-law, Konalee in 2011.Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Redlin Funeral Home with Pastor Lisa Newberry officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery. Remember, Goodbyes are not forever, are not the end; it simply means I'll miss you until we meet again. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
