Virgil E. Klemm


Virgil E. Klemm, age 94 of Baraboo passed away Saturday, April 29, 2017 at St. Clare Meadows Care Center with family by his side. Virgil, son of Ernest and Myrtle (Leatherberry) Klemm was born April 14, 1923 at St. Mary's Ringling Hospital in Baraboo; he was the first baby born there. On June 17, 1944 he was united in marriage to Virginia Grace Dunse at St. John's Lutheran Church; she preceded him in death on April 6, 2000. Virgil was involved in the building of Badger Army Ammunition Plant in 1942 and continued working there until his retirement in October of 1985. At this time he opened Klemm's Saw Shop where he specialized in tool repair, woodworking, and saw sharpening throughout his retirement. Virgil was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Baraboo; he also enjoyed participating on their bowling league. Virgil was an avid gardener and many people enjoyed his flower gardens. Survivors include his five children, Richard Klemm of North Freedom, Anthony (Judy) Klemm of North Freedom, Charlotte (Eric) Whitman of LaCanada, California, Virgil "Beaner" Klemm, Jr. of Sunland, California, Timothy (Laurie) Klemm of Rock Springs; sister, Betty Meyers of Baraboo; brother, Phillip (Mary) Klemm of North Freedom; sister-in-law, Shirley (Bob) Ginovsky; 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; uncle, Leon Leatherberry (age 98); nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia; brother, Robert Klemm; sister, Marjorie Zimmerman; an infant daughter, Barbara and grandchildren, Daniel and Sarah. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017 at St. John's Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Nick Maglietto officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Rock Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family. The family wishes to thank everyone at Home Health United and St. Clare Meadows for all their care, also a special thanks to caretakers Ethel and Beth and Dr. Flygt for the care shown to Virgil.
