Charles Henry "Charlie" Bair


Charles Henry Bair, 75, passed away Friday, April 7, at his home in Baraboo, Wisconsin. He was born October 13, 1941, at St. Mary's Ringling Hospital in Baraboo to Harold and Evelyn (Grover) Bair.Charlie grew up at his family farm in Fairfield and attended Lower Narrows School for grades one through eight. Charlie spoke fondly of working summers for the Litscher family on their farm. He attended Baraboo High School, where he excelled at basketball and football. Charlie received all-conference honors for basketball and honorable mention all-state recognition for football. After graduating in 1959, Charlie attended UW-Stevens Point, majoring in secondary education. He married Jennifer Brannan and had three sons: Charles (Hank), Jr., Jason, and Matthew.He taught at Columbus High School in Columbus, Wisconsin, but then returned to Baraboo and taught history and political science at Baraboo High School. He also coached football and track. He was proud to have played a role in the 1970 and 1971 undefeated football teams and the 1971 state championship track team. Charlie worked many summers as a policeman at Devil's Lake State Park and enjoyed spending time with his family at their cabin on the South Shore of Devil's Lake. On June 18, 1977, Charlie married Barbara Bates and they had one son, Jesse.Later, Charlie accepted a position as teacher at the St. Clare Hospital adolescent alcohol and drug treatment program. He then worked in environmental services until his retirement. Charlie took great pleasure watching his sons participate in many sports, including football, hockey, basketball, and track. He also enjoyed watching and discussing Wisconsin sports, arguing politics, and traveling.He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Allan, and is survived by his wife and four sons, two grandsons, sister Donna Meyer, brother Tom, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.In lieu of a public service, family has chosen to remember him privately. Donations may be made on his behalf to the Baraboo Blue Line Club, in support of Baraboo hockey. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family.
