Walter "Walt" Darling, age 82 of North Freedom passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017. Walter, son of Miles and Nellie (Van Gilder) Darling was born Aug. 14, 1934 in Redfield, South Dakota. On Dec. 17, 1953 he was united in marriage to Dora Schulenburg in Hecla, South Dakota. Walt served proudly served in Germany and Okinawa, Japan during the Korean War with the United States Army. He ran the Railway Inn Cafe in North Freedom from 1966 until 1974. After his cooking career Walt worked as an over the road truck driver and went into early retirement due to a debilitating accident. In retirement he was able to enjoy many loving years with his wife, Dora until her health declined and she was placed into a nursing home. Walt was a great example of a loving husband; he spent as many hours as he could by Dora's side. Walter was a lifelong member of North Freedom Methodist Church and the North Freedom Veterans Honor Guard.Walter is survived by his loving wife, Dora; children, William (Jill Mohn) Darling and Wayne (Valerie) Darling; grandchildren, Jason (Jenny), Jennifer, Matthew (Casandra), Lucas, Wesley Jr., Bailey, and Jessica; as well as great-grandchildren, Aiden, Ava, Jake, Samantha and Talia. He is further survived his siblings, David (Karen) Darling, Steve (Pat) Darling, Mike (Joyce) Darling, Mark (Carol) Darling, Janette (Gary) Buchele, Roger (Penny) Darling, Paul (Sylvia) Darling; brothers-in-law, Tom (Debbie) Smothers and Tom Weisegram; sister-in-law, Vera (Jerome) Osness as well as nieces, nephews, dear friends, Buck and Deb Harvey, Kay Cowing and Jerome and Jessica Perea and family, other relatives and many friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerald; sisters, Susan Weisegram and Mary Wepner; children, Lawrence, Dale, Walter, Jr., and Wesley, Sr.Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2017 at 11 a.m. at North Freedom Methodist Church with Pastor Carol Quinn officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 23, 2017 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Redlin Funeral Home, 401 Madison Ave. in Baraboo and from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Tuesday. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery where Military Rites will be conducted by the North Freedom Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice in Walt's name.
