Walter D. “Walt” Smith

Walter D. "Walt" Smith, age 80 of Baraboo passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016 with his family by his side. Walter, son of Walter and Evelyn (Murphy) Smith was born June 7, 1936 in Rensselaer, Indiana. Upon his high school graduation he enlisted in the United States Army in Jan. of 1955; he served 7 months in Korea and was honorably discharged in April of 1956. Walt attended and graduated from Walton School of Commerce in Chicago; after his schooling he sat and passed his CPA exam and began his working career. After working in various states he moved to Baraboo in 1976; in 1983 he opened his own CPA Firm. In 1960 he was united in marriage to Yvonne Dietz in Sterling, Illinois. As it was said when he received the Gem Award, Walt dedicated his working life in helping to make Baraboo a more prosperous and positive place to live and work'. Walt was a member of the Baraboo American Legion, Post 26. He was also a sports enthusiast and enjoyed traveling.Survivors include his loving wife, Yvonne; children, Michele (Wade) Oldenburg of Idaho, Michael (Meaghan) Smith of Utah, Kevin (Holly) Smith of Florida, Bryan (Viviana) Smith of Wyoming, Denise (Louis) Creager of South Korea, Derek Smith of Wisconsin; grandchildren, Morgan, Brooke, Danielle, Michaela, Cody, Jake, McKenna, Dillon, Libby, and Spencer; great-granddaughter, Reese; brother, James (Pauline) Smith of California; as well as nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Geraldine Smith; brother, Donald Smith; and his grandson, Brock Smith.A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Jay Poster officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday, Nov. 21, 2016 at Redlin Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. and at church from 11:30 a.m. until the time of mass on Tuesday. Military Rites will be conducted by the Baraboo Veterans Honor Guard at the church. Memorials may be made in Walt's name to St. Joe's, or to a community charity of your choice.
