David Herritz


David Herritz, age 74, of North Freedom, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. David, son of Harry E. and Ella (Klukas) Herritz was born Oct. 12, 1941. On Aug. 15, 1961 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served an extended tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal on March 14, 1966. To say David was a proud veteran would be an understatement; he was a true patriot who loved God and country. While enlisted he received numerous medals including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Sharpshooter Badge, Good Conduct Medal and the Marksman Badge. He was employed at Tillson Roofing Co., Badger Army Ammunition Plant and Petrolane. After 27 years as the head custodian of South School in Baraboo he retired shortly after his 60th birthday; the family will cherish memories from the school staff and students referring to him as Mr. Clean' and being a prankster.He married the love of his life, Jean Marie Luther on Nov. 5, 1966 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo. David was loved by all of his nieces and nephews because of his great sense of humor and his practical joking; he was a loving husband and great provider. He loved the outdoors, nature and was a real sportsman who truly enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, bow hunting and fishing.Survivors include his loving wife, Jean of North Freedom; siblings, Cliff Herritz of Mesa, AZ, Caroline AmDahl of Madison, Jim (Nancy) Herritz of Madison, Judy (Bob) Ellis of Indianapolis, Indiana, Richard (June) Herritz of North Freedom; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronald (Sandy) Luther, Donna Luther, Wayne (Sally) Luther, Judy Shelton, Dale (Lorene) Luther, Bonnie (Ron) Bell, Mona (Bill) Hilgemann, Tom (Mary Claire) Luther, and Mike (Debbie) Luther as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Anthony and Alma Luther; brothers, Ronald, Larry and Everett; sisters, Shirley, Ethel and Delores; brothers-in-law, Jerry Luther, Dennis Luther, Tom Shelton, Fred Steinke, Gerald Griffith, Edward Currie and sister-in-law, Ginny Herritz.Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 9, 2016 at Walnut Hill Bible Church with Pastor Dave Hutchens officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Redlin Funeral Home and on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Military Rites will be conducted at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to be used toward a memorial in honor of David for the North Freedom American Legion and VFW.
