Dr. Gerald J. Holmen


Dr. Gerald "Jerry" James Holmen, 81, of Baraboo passed away on Monday, Jan. 18, 2016 due to complications after a recent surgery. He was born the son of Guy and Joyce (Dahl) Holmen on Feb. 16, 1934 in Austin, Minnesota. He married Normalee Callaway in 1954 and together they had four children. He later married Kimberly Lewis in 1985 and had one son. Jerry graduated from Viroqua High School in 1952. He earned a Bachelor's of Science in Pharmacy in 1957 and obtained his Doctorate of Medicine in 1961, both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1964 upon which he started his medical practice in Baraboo. During his 45 years of practice Jerry delivered more than 1,400 babies, served on numerous committees at the St. Clare Hospital, and thoroughly enjoyed caring for his patients in the community. His many interests included photography, performing magic, and traveling. His favorite destinations were China, Egypt, and Italy. He enjoyed making people laugh with a good, or bad, joke.Jerry is survived by his children, Susan (Karl) Castello of Brown Deer, David (Criss Swanson) Holmen, Christine Quandt, and Matthew Holmen all of Baraboo; two granddaughters, McKenna Quandt and Maggie Castello; as well as a sister, Janice Risteen of Chicago, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; three infant children; and son, James Holmen. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 pm on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016 at the Redlin Funeral Home in Baraboo with Father Scott Seefeldt officiating. Visitation will be held from 12 pm NOON until the time of service at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place following the service at the Walnut Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Smile Train, P.O. Box 96231, Washington, D.C. 20090 or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at St. Mary's Hospital for their compassionate care during his final days.
