Warren V. Beal, age 94 of Baraboo passed into eternal life with his family by his side on Sunday, August 16, 2015 at St. Clare Meadows Care Center. Warren, son of Thomas and Ludwin Estelle (Bohn) Beal was born on Oct. 2, 1920 in Alliance, Nebraska. His father passed away when he was 3 months old, and with the help of generous relatives on both coasts, his widowed mother was able to provide a good education for Warren and his surviving two older sisters, Mary and Elizabeth (AKA Betty). His sister Barbara died at 2 years of age in 1918. After attending Catholic grade schools, he received a Jesuit education at Rockhurst High School and College in Kansas City, Missouri. Warren served in the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War II. He served with an Engineer Brigade in New Guinea and the Philippines, was awarded a Purple Heart as a result of an injury which he downplayed later, and was proud of having seen General MacArthur at his Philippine headquarters in Tacloban. While visiting his cousin, Dr. John Lobaugh in Baraboo, Warren met the love of his life, Betty Brei, who was working in John's newly established dental practice. On June 6, 1953 he was united in marriage to Beatrice Mae Brei at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo.Betty and Warren spent 10 years of their early marriage in Mobile, Alabama. While living in Mobile, Warren handled retail store relationships for women's dress manufacturer Jonathan Logan in a territory extending from Alabama to the Carolinas. Upon his return to Baraboo, Warren represented dressmaker Henry Lee in Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota. After returning to Baraboo in January 1965, Warren renovated a home, on the corner of Eighth and Barker Streets to suit his growing family, and his children were fortunate to be able to walk to St. Joseph grade school. All looked forward to seeing the roses he grew on the redwood fence he built there. Putting his Army engineering skills to good use he placed a retaining wall on the property front, creating a perfect viewing spot for summertime circus parades, and always had marigolds in full bloom there for fall. After retirement Warren enjoyed working part time as a courier for the Baraboo National Bank. He was very involved with the NAMI of Sauk County and delivered Meals on Wheels.Warren was an avid gardener, his vegetable garden started each year by his wife, Betty with indoor seedlings. By harvest time there was always an abundance of produce to share (and for Betty to can and freeze). In addition to picking from his large raspberry crop, his grandchildren were especially amazed by "Grandpa's trees" which he planted surrounding the property. He obtained seedlings from the DNR around 1975, nurtured them for several years, then transplanted them to his Pine Acres residence, where they now form a 40 foot wall around the property.Survivors include his wife of over 62 years, Betty of Baraboo; children, Ann (Gary) Karch of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Andy of Madison, Matthew of Baraboo, Joseph of Chicago, Ill., James of Madison, Dan (Michelle) Beal of Baraboo; grandchildren, David, Aaron, and Samuel Karch, Jacob, Maxwell and Joey Beal, Benjamin and Madelyn Beal; as well as nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 older sisters; daughter, Mary Elizabeth; and son, Thomas Anton.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 24, 2015 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Jay Poster officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of mass at the church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Baraboo Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Joseph School Endowment Fund, to NAMI of Sauk County or to a favorite Charity. Best of all, take a stroll through St. Clare Meadows, say hello to the residents, and visit the center courtyard in Warren's honor! He wanted us to get the word out about how nice that courtyard is.
