James “Jim” Quandt
James "Jim" Quandt, age 83 of North Freedom, passed away following a 10 month battle with cancer on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at home, with his family by his side. Jim, son of Ernest and Ethel (Dahlke) Quandt was born on July 22, 1932. He graduated in 1949 from Baraboo High School and continued his education by attending a UW Farm Short Course in 1950. Jim ran his family farm for over 40 years in the North Freedom area. On Dec. 30, 1951 he was united in marriage to Gertrude Kohlhapp at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo. Jim also worked as a rural mail carrier for the postal service and retired after 20 years of service in 1995. He served on the Baraboo School District School Board for 25 years. In addition being an avid Badger, Packer and Brewer fan he enjoyed watching golf. Jim was extremely active in the community; he was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Golden K; he served on the Town Board for the Town of Excelsior and was President of the Lutheran Bowling League for many years. After retirement he drove for the Commission of Aging, now the ADRC; and delivered meals on wheels in the North Freedom area. In addition to his other hobbies he loved to fish, hunt, bowl, put puzzles together and play cards.Survivors include his wife of over 63 years, Gert of North Freedom; children, David (Patty) Quandt of Baraboo, Dennis (Penny) Quandt of Baraboo, Donna Quandt of North Freedom, Duane "Boot" Quandt of North Freedom; grandchildren, Brian (Melissa) Quandt of Shorewood, Kelli (Matt) Quandt Eddy of Baraboo, Daniel (Katya) Quandt of North Carolina and Thomas Quandt of Monona; great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Addison and Carter Quandt, Tayt and Elyse Eddy, Valya and Alexander Quandt; brother-in-law, Frederick (Ellen) Kohlhapp as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and many, many friends.He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Quandt; mother, Ethel Quandt-Hanusa; step-father, Henry Hanusa; sister, Jean Quandt Graunke; brother-in-law, Vernon Graunke; his father and mother-in-law, Harry and Goldie Kohlhapp.Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church with Pastor Carl Schroeder officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church. A private family burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made St. John's Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society or to the family to be used towards a scholarship in Jim's name.The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. James Heun, Dr. Danny Sessler, Agrace Hospice Staff, staff at St. Clare Meadow's and family friends for all of the phone calls, cards, prayers and visits over the last 10 months.
