Roger E. Stieve of Baraboo


Roger E. Stieve, 82, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2014, surrounded by his family. Roger was born January 20, 1932, in the town of Baraboo, to Fred and Anna (Kapelka) Stieve. Roger attended school in the Baraboo School District and worked on the family farm for his father.In 1951, he met the love of his life Mary Ellen McCormick. He continued to work for his father while Mary attended Sauk County Teacher College. On May 22, 1954 they were united in marriage at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Baraboo. They continued to live on the farm on Terrytown Road, until September of 1955, when he was drafted into the military. After basic training at Fort Collin Colorado, he was sent to Fort Dix in New Jersey, later he was sent to Fort Riley Kansas, where he was stationed until his release, being honorably discharged in June 1957. At that time he returned to the farm to work for his parents, until October of 1959, when he and Mary purchased a home on Guppy Street, where they resided for 49 years and 7 months. On November 1, 1959 he went to work for Sauk County Farmers Union Co-op, for the next 34 years where he managed the Agromy Dept.Roger was very community minded. He was an usher at St. Joseph's Catholic Church for many years, served on the church council for four terms, he was the chairman of a bingo group for about ten years. He was a 4th Degree Knight with the local Knights of Columbus. He was a 33 year member of the Baraboo Fire Department where he was an Assistant Chief, and was Chief of the Baraboo Ambulance for 17 years. He served as the Exalted Ruler for the Elks from 1975-1976, before being Exalted Ruler, he served in all of the other offices. He was installed as Grand Exalted Ruler, District Deputy in 1991, for the Southwest District in WI, he also held the Vice President office in the same area. He served as Treasurer of Lodge 688 for 3 years, also Treasurer for the PER group for several years. In 1988 he received the Al Dipple Community Service Award.Roger is survived by his wife Mary, children; Anthony Stieve of Chicago, IL, Theresa (Tom) Dorner of Baraboo, Timothy (Debbie) Stieve of Baraboo, Kathryn (John) Statz of Baraboo, Kevin (Tammy) Stieve, fourteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Ronald Stieve of Baraboo; sisters-in-law Bonnie Stieve, Teri McCormick, three brothers-in-law J. Pat (Monica) McCormick, William (Jan) McCormick, and James (Carol) McCormick; many nieces and nephews.Roger was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Lawrence Stieve and Harold Stieve; sister, Marian Halweg; nephews, James Halweg and Steven Halweg; brother-in-law, Martin Halweg; sister-in-law, LaVerne Stieve.A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Jay Poster officiating. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of mass at the church. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery where Military Rites will be conducted by the Baraboo Veterans Honor Guard. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 9 a.m. at the church. The Redlin Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic School Endowment Fund, St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Baraboo Fire Department.The family would like to thank the hospital staff, especially Dr. Sessler, Dr. Jarvis and Dr. Orkfritz for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Roger and his family.
