Leon E. Laubscher, age 98, passed away on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, at Sienna Meadows in Mineral Point.Leon, the son of Fred and Ida (Traeder) Laubscher, was born Feb. 15, 1916, in Wonewoc. He graduated from St. Paul's Lutheran Grade School and Wonewoc High School. Leon then worked as a mechanic and for Northwest Refrigeration Co. until enlisting in the Army from 1942-1945, serving in the SW Pacific, Hawaii, New Guinea, Morotai, Philippines and Japan.He was united in marriage to Verona T. Bisson, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo , on June 1, 1947. He then began his career at the US Post Office as a city carrier (18 yrs.) and a rural carrier (13 yrs.) in Baraboo, retiring in 1977. They then spent winters in Texas until 2006.Leon was a member of the Baraboo Fire Dept. (27 yrs.) and an EMT for Baraboo Ambulance (12 yrs.). He was active in VFW, American Legion, Wis. Rural Letter Carriers, 4-H, and volunteering for many church activities and work crews. He was always willing to help a neighbor. His hobbies included woodworking, horseshoes, fishing, hunting, baseball, tennis and gardening.Survivors include two daughters, Carol A. Palzkill of Mineral Point and Nancy K. Laubscher of Cumming, GA.; two grandchildren, Jim and Tony (Laura) Swanson; three great-grandchildren, Samantha (Isaac) Arten, Cassandra and Dayn Swanson; two nieces, Judy (Tom) Pluck and Kathy (Jim) Yaresh, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verona in 1998; two sisters, Arline Laubscher and Navada Evans; brother-in-law, John Evans; niece, Barbara Franta; son-in-laws, Robert Ankenbrandt and James Palzkill.A special thank you to the Sienna Crest Memory Care staff for the loving care and attention given to Leon. Also to St. Jude Hospice.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Baraboo with Pastor Carl Schroeder officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Burial will follow the service at Walnut Hill Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Baraboo Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, 624 East St., Baraboo, WI 53913.
