Walter "Wally" Konkel


Walter "Wally" Roy Konkel, age 80, passed away at his childhood home in Caledonia Township on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014. Wally was born March 14, 1933 in Portage to the late George and Myrtle (Rietmann) Konkel. He was a graduate of Portage High School and served in the National Guard. On May 1, 1954 Wally married Joan Kirner. He was self-employed as a carpenter and built several family members' homes. Wally's favorite time of year was deer hunting season. He loved hunting with his nephews and extended family and deer camp in the pole shed. Wally also enjoyed fishing and trips to Canada.He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Joan; their children, Terry (Karll) Kruse of Portage, Lori (Jim) Turek of Green Bay and Jeff Konkel of Portage; grandchildren, Katelyn (fiance, Joel Webb) Kruse of Madison, Kristopher Kruse of Portage, Mia Turek and Tim Turek of Green Bay; sisters, Delores Bublitz, Nellie (Allen) Zurbachen, Barb Kluge, Karen (Dale) Nichols; sisters and brothers-in-law, Joyce Herwig, Fred Koroch, Janice Frank, Ron (Arlene) Kirner, Jackie Healy, Larry Kirner, Jeanne Baertsch; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many other friends and relatives. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Mildred and Paul Kirner; brothers-in-law, Ken Bublitz, Bob Kluge, Stuart Herwig, Everett Frank Jr., sister-in-law, June Koroch and son-in-law, Peter Sviatoslavsky.Family and friends may call at Redlin Funeral Home, 401 Madison Ave. in Baraboo on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014 from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Jonathan Tipton officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Portage. To celebrate Wally's carpentry skills, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 38, Baraboo, WI 53913.
