Julie Nagel , Age 72

September 16, 1953 --January 29, 2026

Julie Nagel, devoted wife, mother, and Nana, passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, January 29, 2026, in Baraboo. Although she was taken too soon after a short but valiant fight with cancer, we take solace in her final hours that she was in the place she treasured most – home with her three daughters and husband, Bob, by her side.

Julie was born in Manitowoc, on September 16, 1953, to parents Quiren and Amelia Yindra. She graduated from Denmark High School in 1971, and then attended Holy Family Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1974. She met Bob Nagel while working at Holy Family Hospital, and they were married in 1976. They moved to Baraboo in 1980, where they raised their family and made many friends over the years.

Nursing was a fitting career choice for Julie, as she exemplified selflessness and dedicated her life to serving others – be it patients in the hospital, her own children, and then later in life her grandchildren. She worked at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo beginning in 1980, retiring in 2017. Even after retirement, she continued at St. Clare as a greeter and was also active in numerous local organizations including the Baraboo Food Pantry, Emanuel Methodist Church, and Quilters for Christ.

Julie’s love for her family truly had no bounds. Willing to hop on a plane to help out with her grandchildren at a moment’s notice, she was a frequent visitor to her children's homes. As an adoring grandma – Nana to the grandkids – she would spend hours with the little ones, snuggling, crawling on the floor, playing, doing art projects, telling stories, and reading books. She will always be remembered by her grandchildren for her love, kindness, and the unique personal treasures she handmade just for them.

Julie brought to this world a calm and open willingness to listen to, empathize with, and understand others. She provided a role model as the cornerstone of the family and as a valuable community member. In her final days, she, Bob, and her daughters hosted a continual stream of visitors, friends from all over coming to pay their respects and tell Julie how much she meant to them. This well represented the wide reach of friendship Julie had graced upon the community. As a family, we will be forever grateful for the outpouring of support we have received. While Julie left this world suddenly and too soon, she did it on her terms in the end, which provides a measure of peace for the family in this painful time. Julie’s unwavering Christian faith gave her a sense of peace in her final months, as she so looked forward to being in eternal paradise with God.

She is survived by Robert Nagel, her husband of nearly 50 years; daughter, Holly (Dave) Mowell with granddaughter Carlie and grandson Gavin; Heather (Mike) Ethier, with grandson Ben and granddaughter Ellie and Lindsey (James) Springhetti, with grandsons Jude and Miles. She is also survived by various family members and in-laws including Jean and Doug Stewart, Ed and Judy Muelling, Rick Nagel, Sue (Schroeder) Rabenhorst, numerous “sister” cousins, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Julie was preceded in death by her parents, Quiren and Amelia Yindra; parents-in-law, Ione and Walter Nagel; brothers, Jim and Roger Yindra and sister-in-law, Judith Kurka Nagel.

The family will host a Celebration of Life on April 4, 2026, at Emanuel Methodist Church, 101 14th Street, Baraboo, with a Visitation from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. and a Celebration of Life beginning at 11 a.m., luncheon to follow. A private burial will be held at a later date in Kellnersville.

In lieu of flowers, it was Julie's wish that donations be made to the PAN Foundation or the SJS Cancer Support Team based in Baraboo.

Even in the days before passing, she demonstrated her belief that life is to be treasured and celebrated by insisting that at her Celebration of Life no one is to be dressed in black – as such, please come on the day before Easter in any beautiful color that represents the new life of spring and Easter. We know Julie will be looking down at the gathering and smiling.

Sending my deepest sympathies. I worked with Julie at St Clare Hospital, she truly exemplified that of being an exceptional nurse and living the mission of our sister’s. I know that because of the numerous times when I was rounding on patient they would want to recognize her for the care and compassion she provided. I also remember sending her little notes because of her name being mentioned in patient satisfaction forms she was missed on retirement and she will be missed always.

My mama heart remembers well sharing “mom” stories & thoughts with sweet Julie many years ago in the St Clare halls as we were both working and raising our much loved children. Know above all else how much she truly loved you all and let others know it! She is only a thought away until you see her again thanks to Jesus.. Praying you thru this time of change.
