George R. Burgess passed away on January 16, 2024 at Oak Park Place in Baraboo, surrounded by his loving family.

George was born October 8, 1942. He was adopted by George and Elsie Burgess as a very young child. He married Joyce Hengstler on December 22, 1963. George was a wonderful father to his 2 children, Wayne and Jamie Sue. George always wanted to help people. He served in the Army from 1963 to 1966, He farmed for several years and then worked at several Baraboo factories throughout his career, Kleins, NECO/Hammond, and Servo until his retirement in 2008. In the mid-1990s, George felt the call of God; he became a Certified Lay Speaker in the First United Methodist Church in 1998. He provided pastoral care to home-bound parishioners, bringing the Sacraments to them when they couldn’t get to church. He also preached sermons and conducted funerals.

He was Scoutmaster for Cub Scout Pack 391 for a number of years.  George was a co-founder of Explorer Post 2391, which allowed kids of all ages with special needs to enjoy scouting. He was Scoutmaster from 1982 until 2006. George also loved traveling, camping, and spending time with family and friends. He was a member of the Baraboo Elks Post 608 and the American Legion Post 26 for many years. As an adoptee, George always wondered where he came from. Later in life, he was able to find his birth mother and they forged a strong connection.

George was preceded in death by his daughter, Jamie Sue Burgess, his adoptive parents George and Elsie Burgess, his birth mother Olive Hintz, in-laws, Gordon and Lillian Hengstler; sister-in-law Lois Hengstler and brothers-in-law Howard Hengstler and Arlan Dunse. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, his son, Wayne (Jodi) of Lodi, and his granddaughter Genevieve, and sister-in-law Maurine.

Memorials can be sent to the First United Methodist Church (https://barabooumc.org/), Fishing Has No Boundaries (http://www.haywardfhnb.org/), or the Wisconsin Badger Camp (https://www.badgercamp.org/)  The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Oak Park Place for the love and compassion shown to George and family.
