George Neil Maxwell , Age 85

June 27, 1938 --January 05, 2024

George Neil Maxwell of Greenfield Township, age 85, of Baraboo passed away peacefully at home on January 5, 2023.

George was the middle son of Neil Maxwell and Grace (Lubecki) Maxwell and was born on June 27, 1938 in Nelsonville, WI. He spent his childhood growing up in Wisconsin Rapids and graduated from Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School, Class of 1956. George and Genevieve Gean (Henke) Maxwell, also from Wisconsin Rapids, were married on June 29, 1963, a marriage that would flourish for over 60 years. George and Gean have three sons; Judd, Jon and Steve. George was a lineman for Wisconsin Power and Light, beginning his pole climbing career in Janesville, WI before moving to Baraboo in 1965. At that time, George and Gean purchased a small hobby farm two miles south of Baraboo, where they raised their three sons and resided ever since. In 1993, George retired from WP&L after 33 years. He was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church on the square. He accompanied church groups on mission trips to Farmington, New Mexico as well as to Trinidad and Tobago. George also served as a member of the Baraboo School Board for 18 years and a former board member of the Baraboo Country Club.

In his free time, he enjoyed hobby farming, hunting, gardening in his flower beds, tending to his lawn, golfing and watching the Badgers, Packers and Brewers. George was an accomplished deer hunter and had been hunting since the age of 14. He was especially proud of the nine-point buck he bagged this season, as he said "not bad for an 85 year old". George was a hard worker and did many things his way, his farm being the showpiece testament to his lifelong effort to create his slice of heaven on earth.

George is survived by his wife; his sons, Judd (Pam) Maxwell of Baraboo, Jon (Bobbi) Maxwell fo Loganville, and Steve Maxwell of Greenfield; his grandchildren, Brock (Ashley), Mallory, Joe, George, Thomas, Rosemary, and Jaelyn. He is also survived by four sisters-in-law and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. The entire Maxwell family feels blessed to have had their husband, dad, and grandpa in their lives for as long as we did.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife's parents, both brothers Ron and Bob, eight brothers-in-law and six sisters-in-law.

Following George's final wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial service. Instead, his cremains will eventually be interred at Tucker Hill Cemetery in the Township of Greenfield in a future private ceremony.

The Redlin-Ertz Funeral Home is assisting the family.

I'm saddened by the loss of George. I'll miss his smile and wave from across the street. I'll miss our chats about flowers and trees. I'll miss his blue Christmas lights that would glow so brightly over a snowy landscape. In a mere 12 years, he left a beautiful foot print in my life. I was blessed to have known him and his family.
