Charles L. `Chuck` Spencer , Age 77

October 08, 1946 --December 26, 2023

Charles “Chuck” Lee Spencer, age 77 of Baraboo, WI passed away in the early morning hours of December 26, 2023 at his home surrounded by his children after a long battle with cancer. A man of profound faith and love of the Trinity, it is fitting that he went home to heaven to celebrate with Jesus and Norma (Chuck’s wife) after all the Christmas festivities were complete here on Earth.

Chuck was the second youngest son of Pearson “Pete” and Melissa (Scoles) Spencer born on October 8, 1946. In 1964, Chuck graduated from Mauston High School, married his love, Norma Atkinson and had his beloved son, Todd. His daughter, Sarah, followed a few years later. Chuck and Norma built a life on their love of family and the Lord. They were overjoyed to welcome to the family, Lisa Hansen (Todd’s wife) and Kobi Danke (Sarah’s husband).

Charles was not just a leader; he was a mentor, a guide, and a source of inspiration for countless individuals. His kindness and genuine concern for the well-being of others left an enduring impact on the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate to cross his path. He was involved in many men’s groups, at Living Hope, Emanuel Church, and Walnut Hill Bible Church. He also loved his morning coffee with his close group of men friends in Reedsburg. He took great mischievous joy in taking his daughter or his granddaughters to the men’s coffee group, especially when one of the girls won at dice.

A highly intelligent individual, Chuck dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge, especially surrounding the bible. He loved the Lord with all his heart and knew His word. He did not keep this knowledge to himself, he constantly worked to uplift and inspire those around him. His curiosity knew no bounds and he shared his insights generously, leaving an indelible mark on the minds of all he engaged with. One of his greatest achievements was the publishing of his book, “Simply God: A Tutorial in Receiving all God has to offer”. He believed that Christians tend to overthink the promises of God and therefore make the relationship more complicated than God intended.

Chuck proudly served as a Sauk County board supervisor, where his passion for community and justice shone brightly. His tireless efforts and commitment to public service demonstrated his love for Sauk County. He was so proud to be part of the generations of Spencer’s who have lived in the county. As a matter of fact, he is the sixth Charles L Spencer in his family tree. He was also in the Lions Club, as well as volunteering at various churches. One of his favorite memories was a missions trip to Nepal in 1999. He loved the team that he traveled with and made friends in Nepal who he stayed in touch with until his death.

His greatest loves and sources of pride, however, were his grandchildren, Abby, Allyson and Charlie Spencer and Holland and Lily Danke, who he supported and encouraged in all their endeavors. He coached basketball when Abby was younger and did not miss events from little league games to dance recitals for all the children. He could always be seen on the sidelines yelling encouragement. He was made to be a grandfather! His mischievous, childlike side was evident in everything he did with his grandkids. Never wanting to miss out, Chuck took many adventures with his family. His last trip was with his son, Todd and his namesake and only grandson, Charlie to the Ark and Gettysburg in November 2023. What an adventure. He loved them completely and was so proud of his family!

His wife of 58 years, Norma (Atkinson) Spencer preceded him in death last year. He is survived by his children, their families, his sister and brother-in-law, Barb and Dale Nelson, sisters-in-law, Teresa Atkinson, Ginny (Chris) Pederson, Judy Spencer and many other relatives and friends.

There will be a celebration of his life this Saturday, December 30th, 2023 at Living Hope Church, S3963 Highway BD, Baraboo, WI at 11 am. Visitation will be from 9 – 11 at the church.

The family would like to thank all of the friends and loved ones that have reached out in Chuck’s final weeks. We would also like to thank his doctors, Dr. Huen and Dr. McAuliffe, as well as Agrace Hospice Care, especially nurses Jamie, Sarah and Tricia. He was well cared for by all that he met along this journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to the SJS Cancer Support team, PO Box 213, Baraboo, WI 53913.

As we mourn the loss of this extraordinary man, please celebrate the rich tapestry of a life well-lived. Chuck may no longer be with us in person, but his spirit will continue to resonate in the lives of those he touched. He was intensely proud of the family that he and Norma built. They all live on 20 acres together in Baraboo, a place that Chuck and Norma referred to as their piece of heaven on Earth.

Chuck was a good man and a good loyal friend. I will remember him fondly and will appreciate our time together on the county board (on the Wisconsin River Trans commission and ADRC), and on the Reedsburg Area Historical Society board of directors.

I was blest to serve with Chuck on the Sauk County Board for several years; together we found ‘common ground’ even in the most difficult of times. Two ‘old’ men from very different walks of life—sharing life’s ’ups and downs’—but knowing no matter what—‘life is good.’ In parting, the words of the great Bard: “a flight of angels sing him to his rest.”
