Charles T. “Chuck” Sophie , Age 83

January 02, 1937 --April 09, 2020

Charles T. Chuck Sophie, age 83 of Baraboo, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2020 at St. Clare Hospital with family by his side. Charles, son of Phillip and Viola (Benjamin) Sophie was born Jan. 2, 1937 in Chicago. He enlisted in the US Army on Feb. 14, 1955 and proudly served until his honorable discharge on Jan. 31, 1958. On May 3, 1958 he was united in marriage to Norma Wulf at St. Francis Borgia in Chicago.

Chuck was a printer by trade, having worked many years in the union in Chicago. While working in Chicago, he was very involved in the union and was a great spokesman for them. After moving to Wisconsin, he worked for Main Printing in Madison as well as being the type setting manager for the Shopper Stopper, Merrimac. In November of 1990 he and Norma opened Sophies Fine Jewelry and Gifts in Baraboo which he still operated at the time of his passing. Throughout his years at the jewelry store he made many lasting friendships, especially with his fellow jeweler, Craig Thayer. Chuck was a longtime and active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Baraboo. He enjoyed taking rides in his red 79 Lincoln Continental.

Survivors include his loving wife of over 61 years, Norma; children, Joyce (Bryan Ward) Schmidt, Laura Beth (Gregory Joz) Joswick, Charles D. (Cindy) Sophie, Shannon (Shawn) Weber, Gabrielle (Joe) Jensen, Eileen (Mike) Shanks; grandchildren, Timothy (Dawn), Robert, Leah, Alex (Penny), Andrea (Mark), Amanda (Mark), Madeline, Autumn (Victor), Sophie (Garet), Kelsey (Tyler), Jennifer, Christopher; eight great-grandchildren, and his sister-in-law, Eileen Poczekaj as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Florence and Norman Wulf; daughter, Jennifer Lynn; son, Norman Phillip; and his siblings, Betty, Phillip and Rosie.

A private family mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church and burial will follow at St. Marys of the Pines Cemetery where military rites will be conducted. A public memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church. The service will be available for streaming at baraboocatholic.org on Wednesday April 15, 2020 at 11a.m. This is for streaming purposes ONLY, this is still a private family service and public attendance will not be allowed.

How appropriate for this, "Gem," of a man to spend his last years owning a jewelry store. If the world were filled with hearts as large as Chuck and Norma. The world would be such a better place...Chuck's love, affection, kindness and thoughtfulness for every life he touched leave a myriad of lifelong memories...I remember working hard to convince Chuck to help with St. Joseph's, "Valuing your Sexuality," program back in the day...At first he was hesitant... then he consented (I kind of wouldn't let him say no, ; ) ) as is Chuck he poured his heart into the program with great humor and effort. When you walked into their jewelry store, you were met with love and greetings as if you just came home. I remember when he gifted my grandchildren with little angel pins from his store...Chuck I can see you in heaven right now...hugging the Lord, your loved ones, and departed friends. Every encounter with Chuck and Norma, one walked away feeling loved, accepted and encouraged to do the right thing and try harder...they didnt preach, they both just model(ed) it, regardless of their personal pain and hardships...Chuck you were amazing...Norma you are amazing... just be being true to God, yourselves and your faith. Norma, words fail me in condolences for the loss of your beloved husband, just no you all remain in my tender thoughts and have for all those years. "I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do or any kindness I can show to any fellow human being let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it for I shall not pass this way again." With Deepest respect and Love for you and your entire beautiful family. Gods blessings to you today and always. I am humbled by the Lord's gift to chose Chuck and you and your children to be in my life. Robin (Lincoln) Deethardt

Norma, I’m so sorry for the loss of Chuck. He was a great family man. My heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Sophie family. I will always remember growing up in Merrimac, playing games with every one, when Chuck would pull into the driveway coming home from work, he would honk the horn and the entire Sophie clan would run to greet their father coming home. I will always have fond memories of that and so many other times with the Sophies. Again, my heartfelt condolences.
